Housekeeping Tips: Cleaning Your Kitchen

The best way to clean your kitchen is to tackle each area separately. Here are a few helpful tips and tricks on how to deep clean the different areas of your kitchen.

Refrigerator

You should deep clean your refrigerator two to three times per year. First, you will want to throw away and expired or recalled food. If you are dealing with recalled food that was in a reusable container, then make sure to wash the container with soap and water.

Then, empty out the rest of the refrigerator and place the contents on the counter or table while you clean. Also, take out shelving, drawers, and any other removable parts. You will then want to wash these removable parts with hot water and soap and dry them with a towel.

Wipe down the inside of your refrigerator with hot soapy water and then dry it with a towel. Then, you can place the removable parts back in and organize your food on the shelves.

Oven

Some ovens have a self-cleaning feature, which allows you to clean your oven without the use of cleaning products or elbow grease. If you don’t have a self-cleaning feature, then this will take a little more work.

To start, make your own cleaning solution by mixing 1/2 cup of baking soda with enough water to create a spreadable paste. Then, apply the paste to the inside of your oven using a scrub brush.

After your baking soda solution has been applied, put equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray the solution on top of the baking soda. Close the oven and let the solution sit for at least 12 hours before wiping it off.

While you are waiting, you can clean the oven racks with dish soap or the baking soda solution.

Stove

Cleaning a stove top is fairly straightforward. If you have a gas stovetop, then you can first wipe down the area with a damp cloth and then go over it with a non-abrasive sponge and dish soap. If the stove is overly greasy, then you can use the same baking soda and vinegar solution mentioned above.

If you have an electric stove, then you should use a damp cleaning cloth and dish soap to wipe down the surface. For extra dirt and grime, place the baking soda and water solution on the stove and let it sit for 30 minutes before wiping it off.

Microwave

One of the best ways to loosen up the dirt and grime in your microwave is to mix two tablespoons of white vinegar with two cups of water. Then, place your solution in a bowl and microwave it for five minutes. Let the solution sit for 10 minutes before taking it out.

Once the solution is out of the microwave, you can wipe everything down with a soft rag or paper towel. The vinegar should have loosened everything up, making it easier to scrub down the surface of your microwave.

Dishwasher

You may think your dishwasher is already clean, but in reality, there is likely a lot of leftover food and dirt caked inside the crevices of your appliance. To combat this, place one cup of vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl inside of the dishwasher. Then set the dishwasher to run on a hot water cycle.

This will break down any remaining bits of food, grease, residue, and soap scum in your dishwasher. You can then wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Counters

First, make sure you remove any appliances or objects from your counters. A lot of dirt hides under items such as toasters, breadboxes, and coffee machines.

Most counters can be cleaned with a mixture of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Mix up this solution and wipe your counters down with a microfiber cloth. Make sure you frequently rinse off your cloth with clean water to ensure you are not just spreading dirt around.

Cabinets

Many people don’t think to clean their cabinets, but it is a very important aspect of kitchen cleaning. Many cabinets gather dust and dirt, and many are home to greasy fingerprints. To clean your cabinets, mix up a 50/50 solution of vinegar and warm water and put it in a spray bottle.

Mist the solution on the cabinets and let it sit for a few minutes. Afterwards, wipe your cabinets clean with a soft cloth. If there is a lot of stuck on dirt or grime, then you can add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to your solution before spraying it on the cabinets.
